4th March

Our 3rd and final day in this vivacious city. For those of you who are not aware, at night, the skyline becomes a radiance of lights.  Every skyscraper and tall building has its own particular colour; many of them advertisements, many with neon signs that run the entire height of the building, it is, in a word, breath-taking.  We have a special function during our call, on the aft Lido deck.  Tables are covered with white linen, canapes and wine are served and all the while, for 2 hours, the skyline is the backdrop.

I took my trusty camera and, having done so, promised myself that during my next leave period, I would attend some photography classes; night skylines are some of the most difficult scenes I have encountered.  So, for your delectation, my humble offering, (the ones that survived the “erase images” function that is).  😉

Don’t forget that double-click a photo and it will enlarge with hi-res).

  1. So many memories of this fabulous city. Love the junk picture so much. Wishing we were there with you both. ❤️

  2. The junk in the foreground, the colored reflections on the water….really, some of your best…Congrats and thanks for sharing!

  3. Ditto to all the positive comments re the photos. I so enjoy them. It has been years since I was in Hong Kong and the night lights are what I remember most. With your harbor pictures and the skylines, you have captured the essence of the city. Were there any photos of the special function? Love to see candid shots of crew as sometimes I get a glimpse of crew members from previous trips. 🙂

  4. Beautiful photos. Thank you so much for sharing them! Hong Kong is quite a unique city, such a mixture of old and new cultures.

  5. Captain Jonathon: Suggestion: If you are shooting .jpg, change to camera raw. Then subscribe to Photoshop CC for $10usd/month. This gives you a vastly improved ability to correct exposure problems. It also allows you to use a tripod and do high dynamic range compression, by automatically stacking images. That would give you stunning night images. The main advantage of .CR files is that you retain the full resolution of the cameras A/D converter. You can reduce the highlights by a couple of f stops and still have plenty of luminosity gradation resolution left to avoid a banding water color effect.

    1. Thanks for your tips, Louis. Actually shot Raw on some of them (and tried the tripod). I used ‘Elements 14’, however a novice at it at the moment. I’ll persevere 🙂

  6. Captain,
I don’t know why you think you need a class on photography, all your pictures that you post are great. I like the one of the junk with the pink sails, it is perfect.

  7. Hi Captain J, thanks for your blogs. It is a joy to read them and savour the photographs, makes one feel that we are travelling with you. Your recent photos of Hong kong at night brought back memories when my friend and I joined Amsterdam in HK in March 2013 for cruise to Cape Town. Looking forward to the future blogs.

    Best regards
